Wired.com has a fascinating article on what transpired between AT&T and Apple regarding the iPhone. AT&T comes across as this old, obnoxious, arrogant company struggling to come to terms with modern times. Here are some select quotes…
Apple: No, we are not going to mess up the consumer experience on the iPhone to make your network tenable.
AT&T: We’re going to have to escalate this to senior AT&T executives
Apple: Fine, we’ll escalate it to Steve and see who wins.
AT&T: Let’s resolve these issues together
Apple: No, you resolve them. They’re not our problem. They’re your problem.
Apple: “We’re Apple. We don’t wear suits. We don’t even own suits.” (When an AT&T rep suggested Jobs wear a suit to meet with AT&T’s board!)
Verizon fully capitalized on this. Here’s their ‘Island of misfit toys’ ad. Note how they don’t make the iPhone look bad!
